What Crowns and Bridges Do for Your Smile

Dental crowns and bridges are referred to as restorations because they bring a tooth back to full function and enhance your smile. However, crowns and bridges serve different purposes—read on to learn more!

Dental Crowns Protect and Strengthen Teeth

Dental crowns are also commonly referred to as tooth caps because that’s what they do; they cover a tooth like a durable little cap to strengthen and protect it from further damage. Our dentists in Chicago would recommend a crown in the following situations:

  • A cavity is too large for a filling to protect it
  • A tooth is decayed but already has multiple fillings
  • A broken or cracked tooth needs additional support
  • A root-canaled tooth requires strength and protection
  • A poorly shaped or sized tooth needs to be restored

At Wicker Park Dental Group, we use only ceramic and zirconia crowns that are highly durable and blend seamlessly with your smile.

Dental Bridges Replace Missing Teeth

A dental bridge is a tooth prosthetic designed to replace one or two missing teeth in a row. It consists of an artificial tooth that has a crown attached to either side. The artificial tooth sits in the gap in your smile, and the crowns attach to adjacent teeth for support.

The only thing necessary to place a dental bridge is that teeth adjacent to the gap need to be strong and healthy enough to support a crown. If not, don’t worry; our dentists explain our other tooth replacements, including dental implants.

Why It's a Good Idea to Fix Broken and Missing Teeth

One reason chewing with missing or damaged teeth hurts is the way our teeth function. Each has a specific job to do, and when one is missing, surrounding teeth work harder to compensate for the lost function of the missing tooth. All this extra work can lead to excessive tooth wear and forces on your jaw joint that cause teeth grinding and TMJ problems.

Addressing either problem as soon as possible is the healthiest approach. If we don’t restore a broken or decayed tooth, it will gradually become more damaged and require more involved solutions to fix.

Not replacing a missing tooth eventually results in jaw bone deterioration that puts you at risk for further tooth loss and gives your teeth an aged appearance.

If you want to protect your long-term oral health, it’s always best to address issues like broken and missing teeth as soon as possible

Orlando C

“As a person who hates needles and had bad teeth let me tell you how much I hate the dentist office. Some of my experiences have been so painful I wait until I absolutely have no choice before returning. All of that changed with my experience here! The staff top to bottom front house to back room 5 Star amazing. The doctor so kind so patient explained everything in detail a ton of options. And last but not least … but most important to me little to no pain. Thank the heavens for “ these great people” I’m a customer for life and I look forward to better oral health. Sincerely, ( with a tear of joy ) Orlando.”
