The look you present to others and how confident it makes you feel can lead to interactions that are either rewarding or frustrating. A beautiful smile is the first thing most people notice, but if your teeth are stained or discolored, you may want to hide them from others.
With professional teeth whitening at Wicker Park Dental Group, you don’t have to live with a dull smile or wait forever for generic whiteners to show noticeable results. At our Chicago dental office, we offer in-office whitening and custom take-home kits, so you can choose the method that works best for you.
How Do Teeth Get Stained?
There are two types of stains: intrinsic and extrinsic.
Extrinsic stains affect enamel, the outermost layer of the tooth. These stains are caused by substances like coffee, dark tea, red wine, dark berries, that deposit pigments on teeth. Microscopic pores in your teeth collect the stains, and the result is a dull-looking, discolored smile.
Intrinsic stains exist inside of the tooth and may be a result of conditions like fluorosis or medications like tetracycline. For this reason, teeth whitening won’t eliminate these stains, however, we can recommend treatments like dental bonding or veneers to conceal the discoloration.
Teeth Whitening Options to Fit Your Needs
We are pleased to offer patients two options for teeth whitening in Chicago.
Fast In-Office Whitening
The easiest and most affordable way to boost your smile for a big event like a wedding, reunion, or job interview is in-office teeth whitening. We place a protective layer of gel on your gums, then apply the whitening gel to your teeth in several applications. You can expect to see a dramatically whiter and brighter smile as soon as we complete the procedure.
Custom Take-Home Whitening Kits
If you have a little more time or want to see the most dramatic results, we recommend a custom take-home whitening kit. We start by taking digital impressions of your teeth to prepare custom whitening trays that cover all surfaces of your teeth evenly.
We’ll supply the prescription-strength whitening gel that you place in your trays and use for about 20-30 minutes a day over two weeks. Whitening your teeth consistently day after day tends to deliver more dramatic, noticeable results because the gel comes into contact with your teeth every day.
How to Keep Your Teeth White and Bright
Once you see the stunning results of teeth whitening, you'll want to keep your smile looking bright for as long as possible. Be sure to stay up to date with your teeth cleanings as they eliminate plaque and tartar that contribute to a dull smile. At home, you should brush and floss conscientiously to remove daily plaque buildup that dulls your teeth.
If you choose a take-home whitening kit, you can use your custom trays and leftover whitening gel to perform monthly touchups at home.
